There are many allergy sufferers who feel that dog ownership is a dream beyond their grasps. However, there are many dog breeds that are considered hypoallergenic that are, generally, safe for people who suffer with allergies. These hypoallergenic dog breeds are considered safe for various reasons but the primary reason is that they tend not to cause an allergic reaction to allergy sensitive individuals. One such reason is that hypoallergenic dogs tend to be single coat dog breeds. Dogs with a single coat do not have the thick undercoat that most dogs have and, therefore, do not shed as much or release as much dander into the environment as most other dog breeds would. In addition, allergy friendly dogs also tend to be smaller breeds, such as the American Hairless Terrier. There are many great dog breeds for allergy sufferers. Some of the more popular choices are:
The Maltese
The Maltese is a small breed of dog that characteristically has a long, silky white coat and a playful, outgoing temperament. They are loyal companions who form strong bonds with their owners. This breed of dog also tends to not have the health problems that plague other small breeds, which makes them a great choice for long term companionship.
The Poodle
Poodles are one of the most popular dog breeds around. They have a nice, soft, curly coat that comes in a variety of colors. Poodles also have a wonderful temperament and tend to adapt well to various living environments. There are three types of poodle, the toy poodle, the miniature poodle and the standard poodle. The standard poodle would be a great choice for people who prefer a somewhat larger hypoallergenic dog breed.
The Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie, is another very popular dog breed. They can be quite irresistible with their unique teddy bear appearance and spunky personalities. This dog breed is one of the most confident and outgoing of all the toy breeds. Yorkies are also very athletic so this breed would be a great choice for allergy suffers who want a very active dog.
The Bichon Frise
This is another very elegant dog breed. They have a soft, white, fluffy double coat that is non shedding. Yet, a potential dog owner should not let this delicate appearance fool him. This breed is very sturdy and tends to be a great choice for households with children. The Bichon also tend to have a nice, even temperament and can be surprisingly full of energy at one moment and a calm relaxed lap dog at the next.
The Schnauzer
Miniature Schnauzers are a wonderful breed in so many ways. They are intelligent, eager learners with lots of energy and an even temperament. They tend to be salt and pepper, black and silver or solid black with a soft, thick double coat and wiry top coat that generally does not shed. They are very affectionate and protective, which makes them wonderful watchdogs.
Other Methods of Reducing Allergies
There are other steps that dog owners can take to reduce allergens in the home.
1) Wash the walls.
This is important because when a dog sheds, the dander tends to stick to the walls. Taking this step should reduce the allergen in the home making it a healthier environment.
2) Groom the dog regularly
This step will remove dander from your dog's coat, which means that it will less likely end up on the wall and furniture.
3) Bathe your dog as often as your veterinarian approves for your individual dog.
This will also reduce dander by keeping the skin clean, healthy and strong.
4) Good Housekeeping
It is important to dust and vacuum your home at least once per week. Opening up windows will also flush the dander out of your home.
5) Wash the dog's bedding
This step is imperative because it will reduce dander in the home because the dog will be less likely to track the dander from the bedding to other areas of the home.
Following the steps above will help maintain a happy, healthy environment for both dog and dog owner.
